Petro-Canada
Car Wash POE Terminal

Overview
I led the design of the updated Petro-Canada car wash Point of Entry Terminal, introducing pay-at-entry alongside existing access types like ticket scan, season pass, and mobile app. Previously, customers who didn’t know payment wasn’t available at the gate would get stuck in line or forced to drive through the wash just to exit. Adding fast, on-screen payment at the point of entry reduced user friction, prevented queue breakdowns, and improved throughput while supporting all user types.
Problem
Petro-Canada car wash locations were beginning to see a drop-off in usage as competitors introduced payment at the point of entry while Petro-Canada did not. Customers arriving at the point of entry terminal expected to pay on site, only to discover that no payment option was available. With access limited to ticket scans, season passes, or the mobile app, drivers without these options became stuck in line, causing frustration, blocking queues, and reducing overall car wash throughput.
Goal
Design a point of entry experience that allows customers to pay on site, reduces confusion and line blockages, and improves car wash throughput—while continuing to support existing access methods such as tickets, season passes, and the mobile app.

Challenges
Make on-screen payment options intuitive and easy to scan, while ensuring users can visually connect instructions on the screen with physical elements on the machine.
Solution
A clean, sleek, modern and intuitive interface.
I designed a point-of-entry terminal that allows all customers to pay directly on site while maintaining support for tickets, season passes, and the mobile app. The interface presents clear, scannable payment options that align visually with the machine’s physical elements, minimizing user confusion. By limiting reliance on the older touch screen, the terminal ensures fast, reliable transactions, reduces line blockages, and delivers a smoother, more predictable car wash experience for every customer. Over 300,00+ daily users across Canada use the car wash terminal and there has been a 100% decrease of drivers who have to exit the car wash due to inability to pay for the car wash at the point of entry.
