Petro-Canada
Gas Pump Terminal

Overview

I led the design of the Petro-Canada Gas Pump Terminal screens, modernizing a 20-year-old fueling experience used by over one million customers per day across Canada. The project reimagined both the interaction flow and visual system across multiple screen sizes, supporting a wide range of users—from everyday drivers to fleet and long-haul fuelers—while accommodating loyalty programs, add-on purchases such as car washes, charitable donations, and regional fueling regulations.
Problem
The existing gas pump terminal experience was outdated, visually inconsistent, and difficult to navigate, despite serving a large and diverse user base. Multiple payment methods, regional fueling laws, and optional flows, such as car wash purchases and charitable donations, created complexity that increased confusion, slowed transactions, and led to operational issues like receipt printer jams and interrupted fueling..
Goal
Redesign the pump terminal experience to be modern, clear, and efficient -supporting multiple user types, payment and add-on flows, and regional regulations, while minimizing friction and ensuring fast, reliable fueling at national scale.

Challenges
Designing for a highly diverse audience, including everyday drivers, Petro-Points members, gift card users, and fleet fuelers.
Supporting multiple payment and fueling flows, from quick tap-and-fuel to custom amounts and pay-inside scenarios.
Integrating optional experiences such as car wash purchases and charitable donations without slowing core fueling tasks.
Accounting for regional differences in fueling laws across provinces.
Creating a flexible interface system that worked across multiple screen sizes and legacy hardware.
Improving clarity around critical system messages to reduce user error and operational disruptions.
Solution
A modernized, intuitive pump interface built to handle complexity at scale.
We designed a modular, scalable pump terminal interface that supports a wide range of payment methods, fueling behaviors, and add-on options, including car wash purchases and charitable donations. The updated experience prioritizes speed, clarity, and legibility, enabling quick tap-and-fuel interactions while clearly surfacing optional flows without adding friction. A consistent visual hierarchy and contextual system messaging reduced confusion and prevented common errors, resulting in a modern, reliable fueling experience built to perform at scale.
